Exploring Monte Baldo

One of the things we love doing on our visit to the Nonni is spending some time in the mountains. We chose a short walk in Monte Baldo following a gentle road taking us to the top. The majority of tourists take the cable car from Malcesine along Lake Garda. It explained a lot the inappropriately dressed tourists in their summer dresses. It would not have been the best day for them either as it was foggy chilly and the rain arrived when we made it to the top.

Our walk would usually be about 40 minutes but it took just over an hour with my wee man. Admittedly I was impressed as the only complaint we got was that it was too easy and he kept veering off the path to climb rocks and discover paths through the grassy hillside. It was lovely seeing the flora of the mountain and we spotted huge snails, cows with noisy bells and goats and sheep. We treated ourselves to a warm lunch at the top as unfortunately I missed the view to the lake with all the mist.

I was so proud of my little adventurer who promptly fell asleep on the drive home.

A day by Lake Garda

Our holiday in Italy visiting the Nonni is never complete without a visit to Lago di Garda. To not acknowledge that the wee man loves it would be a bit of an understatement! We went to Lazise which has a long but narrow beach running along the river banks backed by various camping grounds. Obviously that means in the height of summer that makes for a very busy scene. We managed to bag a spot though which had everything my wee man needed to keep himself busy. This visit had an extra special quality!  My wee man loves the water but can be wary of wide expanses of it and especially when they are waves. It only took him a little bit of convincing this time and well once he was in we could not get him out! Add to that a picnic lunch and ice cream it all makes for a perfect day.

Summer growth

It's like you showed us this great big ball of yellow in the sky so we had to do so much to compare with it. We were always building up to this and then well we just all burst open together.

We had longer days to spend time together and we stripped down to the barest minimals to enjoy your warmth. We basked in new salty smells and sandy textures. We managed to get our feet wet in the sea.

There was strawberry flavors coated in sugary sweetness. Chocolatey ice cream flavors to cool us down in your glorious heat. Picnics, lots of picnics. You gave us time, lots of time together as a family. You gave us space to let our imaginations grow. We know our favorite stories by heart.

You have taught us to be bolder and we have practiced and learnt new skills.

Summer you were pretty no holds barred.
